Prioritizing Educator Wellness: Tips for a Healthy & Balanced School Year

Teaching is a very rewarding job, but can be challenging at times.

An educator’s mental and physical wellness is important both inside and outside of the classroom. As summer vacation ends and the new school year begins, it is important for educators to prioritize their health and wellness to help reduce stress and continuously provide their students with the highest quality educational experience.   

 

Here are several tips that educators can implement to improve their overall well-being:

 

  • Practice self-care

Self-care is an essential habit for educators to develop to ensure that they have an appropriate work-life balance. Getting adequate sleep and exercise, eating a well-balanced diet, maintaining social relationships with friends and family, and having hobbies are all ways to take care of one’s mental and physical wellness. With the busyness of all the responsibilities that come with teaching, it is beneficial for educators to set aside time each day to focus on caring for themselves.

  • Connect with other educators

It is important for educators to have supportive relationships in the workplace.  Connecting with colleagues who understand the stress and demands that you may be experiencing can provide opportunities for camaraderie, encouragement, and collaboration. These connections can be fostered during lunch breaks, staff meetings, school events, etc.

  • Establish boundaries

Setting boundaries for yourself in the workplace is crucial for maintaining your health and wellness. It is important to make schedules, minimize distractions, and lose your working time efficiently and effectively. Developing time management skills is beneficial in helping educators set goals, improve productivity, and reduce work stress. Managing your time will help facilitate a healthy work-life balance. 

 

Taking the necessary steps to practice self-care, connect with colleagues, and establish boundaries will promote wellness in educators. This wellness will help provide a rich learning environment, improve student achievement, and prevent educator burnout. Take the time to prioritize yourself. It will not only be beneficial to you, but to your students who deserve the best educational experience.
