Understanding what your healthcare rights are can be difficult, especially if you are faced with the day-to-day challenges of having a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It’s important, however, to be completely clear on what your rights are so that you can protect them. Here is what every family should know about their healthcare rights.

You have a right to a copy of your medical records.

According to federal law, you have a right to receive a copy of your healthcare records, and you also have a right to expect that they will be kept private. The copy can be either paper or electronic, and you will receive it within 30 days.

You have a right to have correct healthcare information.

You also have the right to expect that the information about you held by anyone who is providing you with healthcare be reasonably accurate and complete.

You have a right to know who your healthcare information is shared with.

Your healthcare records may be shared by your medical provider for a number of reasons. In some cases, you may request that certain healthcare information about you not be shared.
